As part of the public contract to design and build the reception area of the La Corderie media library in Marcq-en-Barœul, Guillaume Da Silva, the interior architect who won the tender, was given the opportunity to work on a building that is emblematic of the industrial rehabilitation of northern France.
A project driven by new uses
Rehabilitated and transformed in 2012 by Roubaix architect Gilles Neveux, this former rope factory needed a new lease of life. The age of digitization has brought with it new uses. Today's readers want to be more autonomous when borrowing books. All books have been encoded and marked with RFID codes. Books can now be rented autonomously from self-service terminals, or in a more traditional way at the reception desk.
On the outside, a self-service drop-off machine has been designed so that users can return books 24 hours a day.
A design in keeping with the existing
The original restoration work designed by Gilles Neveux had to be respected, so the interior designer's intervention was sober and discreet. The reception desk was designed in the shape of a pebble, set on a black concrete floor. The elegant design of the kiosks blends in perfectly with the surroundings. The outdoor vending machine was placed in a glass roof, designed as an urban greenhouse, allowing the transparency of the book return mechanism.
Thanks to this new facility, La Corderie de Marcq-en-Barœul has entered the digital age.
